Another inspiration is none other than my best friend who moved to such a foreign city where English is not as welcome as it is in the Nordic countries. She managed to learn German in a short period of time. I did not understand its graveness until I experienced Berlin myself. It's extremely paralyzing for non-German speakers. She took it as an opportunity to learn and not as a roadblock. Learning languages opens doors, minds and in her case, also the heart!
It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I find it extremely fulfilling and that I have a strong sense of achievement. Some people have even told me that I'm wasting my time. Even after just muttering a few words in a new language and having someone else understand it means a lot to me which makes it very much worth it. It's a little bit of a mind exercise too after being so deep into architecture and design. It's almost like an intellectual vacation in a sense, but a vacation that is prolonged and quite useful for the long journey ahead!
